Book Folding Instructions

BetweenTheBindings Book Folding Instructions

Materials:

  • A book with the height and number of leaves specified in the pattern
  • Note: Leaves are not the same as pages. A pattern that requires 100 leaves will need to be done with a book with at least 200 pages.
  • Ruler
  • Pencil

Step 1: Find where to begin the pattern

It is most likely that the book you use will have more leaves than the pattern requires. This means that if you start marking with the first leaf in the book, the pattern will not be centered.

To ensure the pattern is centered in the book, determine how many leaves the book has. Subtract the number of leaves required for the pattern from the number of leaves in the book and divide by two. This will be the leaf of the book to begin the pattern on.

Example:

A book has 150 leaves. The pattern requires 100 leaves. To center the pattern on the book we take 150 โ€“ 100 = 50, then 50 รท 2 = 25. Begin with leaf 25 of the book.

Step 2: Measuring and Marking

Once you have determined which leaf of the book to begin marking, start with the instructions for leaf one of the pattern. Align a ruler at the edge of the leaf with 0cm at the top. With a pencil, make small tick marks by the edge of the leaf according to the pattern. Turn to the next leaf and repeat for each leaf of the pattern.

Step 3: Folding

Now that the book has been marked, start folding with the first leaf of the pattern. Take the top corner of the leaf and fold it down to the top marking. Take the bottom corner of the leaf and fold it up to the bottom marking.

Additional Tips:

  • Work slowly and carefully for the best results
  • Double-check your measurements before folding
  • Take breaks to avoid hand fatigue

How to Use MyPattern

MyPattern is a user-friendly application designed to help you create custom book folding patterns. Follow these steps to transform your images into beautiful book art, complete with step-by-step folding instructions.

1. Import Your Image

  • Navigate to the Import page.
  • Drag and drop an image (JPG, PNG, GIF) or a .ptrn file into the drop zone, or click "Choose File" to browse.
  • Tip: Use high-contrast images with clear shapes for best results. Simple black-and-white designs work exceptionally well.
  • Tip: If you have a previously saved .ptrn file, importing it will restore all settings and unlock instructions automatically.

2. Edit Settings

Go to the Edit page to adjust processing parameters.

Basic Settings:

  • Target Leaf Count: Set the number of book pages (leaves) to match your book. A typical book has 200โ€“300 leaves.
  • Book Height: Enter your book's height in millimeters.
  • Pattern Height: Define the height of your pattern in millimeters. Ensure it fits within your book's height.

Color Processing:

  • Adjust the Black/White Threshold to control contrast. Lower values make more areas black; higher values make more areas white.
  • Fine-tune Red, Green, and Blue thresholds for color images to emphasize specific colors.
  • Check "Invert Colors" to swap black and white areas.
  • Tip: For black-and-white images, focus on the Black/White Threshold. For color images, experiment with RGB thresholds to isolate desired colors.

Margins:

  • Set margins to crop the image, ensuring the pattern fits within the book's pages.
  • Tip: Add small margins (5โ€“10 mm) to center the pattern and avoid edge issues.

Preview the processed image on the right to ensure it matches your vision.

3. Manual Touchup

  • Visit the Touchup page to refine the pattern pixel by pixel.
  • Left-click to draw black pixels; right-click to erase (white pixels).
  • Monitor the Actual Leaf Count to ensure it aligns with your book's page count.
  • Tip: Use touchup to clean up noise or enhance details, especially for complex patterns.

4. Preview Your Book

On the Preview page, visualize how the pattern will look when folded.

Preview Settings:

  • Page Spacing: Adjust the spacing between pages for a clearer preview.

Advanced Options:

  • Enable "Split Book Mode" for patterns that span two sections (e.g., top and bottom halves).
  • Set the Split Point to divide the book, and adjust Upper/Lower Pattern Spacing for alignment.
  • For regular books, use Pattern Spacing to vertically position the pattern.
  • Tip: Split Book Mode is ideal for large or complex patterns that need to be divided across the book's height.
  • Tip: Adjust settings until the preview shows clear, distinct fold lines.

5. Purchase Your Pattern

  • Navigate to the Purchase page.
  • Sign in with Google or email to purchase your pattern for $9.99.
  • Your purchase includes step-by-step folding instructions, audio guidance, and book height adjustment.

After Purchase:

  • You'll be redirected to the MyPattern Reader where you can view your instructions.
  • Purchased patterns are saved to your account and accessible from any device.
  • Visit My Patterns at any time to access your purchased patterns.

Reader Features:

  • View measurements for each page (in centimeters).
  • For split books, see Upper and Lower pattern measurements separately.
  • Use audio-guided instructions to keep your hands free while folding.
  • Adjust book height if your book differs from the original pattern dimensions.

Tips and Tricks for Best Results

  • Image Selection: Choose images with bold, distinct shapes. Silhouettes, logos, or text work better than detailed photographs.
  • Contrast Adjustment: On the Edit page, tweak thresholds until the preview shows a clear pattern. Too much black can make folds too dense; too much white can lose details.
  • Book Selection: Use a hardcover book with enough pages to match your Target Leaf Count. Ensure the book's height accommodates your pattern.
  • Split Book Mode: For complex patterns, split the design to fit within the book's height, adjusting the Split Point to balance the sections.
  • Touchup Precision: Zoom in on the Touchup page (using browser zoom) for precise pixel edits, especially for small details.
  • Testing: Fold a few pages early to test measurements before committing to the full pattern.
  • Dark Mode: Toggle dark mode (top-right corner) for comfortable viewing in low-light conditions.
  • Save Often: Export your .ptrn file regularly to avoid losing progress.

Troubleshooting

  • Pattern Looks Blurry: Ensure your image is high-resolution and adjust thresholds to sharpen the design.
  • Too Many/Few Pages: Adjust Target Leaf Count to match your book, and use Touchup to remove unnecessary pixels.
  • Audio Not Working: Check browser permissions for speech synthesis, or try a different browser.
