Materials:
- A book with the height and number of leaves specified in the pattern
- Note: Leaves are not the same as pages. A pattern that requires 100 leaves will need to be done with a book with at least 200 pages.
- Ruler
- Pencil
Step 1: Find where to begin the pattern
It is most likely that the book you use will have more leaves than the pattern requires. This means that if you start marking with the first leaf in the book, the pattern will not be centered.
To ensure the pattern is centered in the book, determine how many leaves the book has. Subtract the number of leaves required for the pattern from the number of leaves in the book and divide by two. This will be the leaf of the book to begin the pattern on.
Example:
A book has 150 leaves. The pattern requires 100 leaves. To center the pattern on the book we take 150 — 100 = 50, then 50 ÷ 2 = 25. Begin with leaf 25 of the book.
Step 2: Measuring and Marking
Once you have determined which leaf of the book to begin marking, start with the instructions for leaf one of the pattern. Align a ruler at the edge of the leaf with 0cm at the top. With a pencil, make small tick marks by the edge of the leaf according to the pattern. Turn to the next leaf and repeat for each leaf of the pattern.
Step 3: Folding
Now that the book has been marked, start folding with the first leaf of the pattern. Take the top corner of the leaf and fold it down to the top marking. Take the bottom corner of the leaf and fold it up to the bottom marking.
Additional Tips:
- Work slowly and carefully for the best results
- Double-check your measurements before folding
- Take breaks to avoid hand fatigue
